Karaka (Million) 2023 Here We Come
Karaka (Million) 2023 Here We Come

It was terrific to witness New Zealand Bloodstock finally being able to operate a sale that could host international buyers at their magnificent Karaka complex in South Auckland.

Nobody has had a tougher time than the Vela family's NZB in trying to conduct live auctions through Covid, even though we have enjoyed our 'Karaka at Fiorente Farm' events over the past two years as a result of a bit of ingenuity given we could not travel the Tasman to attend in person.

In 2023 they won't be able to hold us back though and we look forward to conducting business (with pleasure as always in New Zealand) on ground at Karaka. We won't be coming alone either. Later in the year please look out for details of our NZ tour where we will be offering our owners the opportunity to attend the Karaka Premier Sale (starts 29 January), and to enjoy all the fun Auckland has to offer in and around this yearling sale held on their Anniversary long weekend.

Karaka Million:
The Karaka Million twilight race meeting (held on the Saturday evening before the sale starts) is one such event that should not be missed (

) and this year we are aiming to have our first runner/s in their $1m 2YO event (28 January).

We have purposefully timed the current preparation of one very forward colt (that we purchased from the 2022 Karaka Premier Sale earlier in the year) to have him up and going at Randwick now to give him the opportunity to race for us and his owners later in January.

KM the Launch Pad:
The colt has the scope in his pedigree to be even better as he matures further, but the Karaka Million is a great race to blood future Classic contenders when you consider the winners of this race over the last 6 years:

  • 2022 winner = Dynastic - won this year but already Group 1 placed at 2YO and Group 2 placed as a 3YO this season to date
  • 2021 = On The Bubbles - won the Group1 Sire Produce and was placed twice at Group 1 level at 2YO & 3YO after his KM win
  • 2020 = Cool Aza Beel - won the Group 1 Diamond Stakes as a 2YO after his KM win
  • 2019 = Probabeel - won 4 Group 1s up to 2000m from 3yo to 5yo after her KM win
  • 2018 = Avantage - won 9 Group 1s up to 2000m from 2yo to 5yo after her KM win
  • 2017 = Melody Belle - won 14 Group 1s up to 2000m from 2yo to 6yo after her KM win
  •

Aussie Advantage:
The great advantage we have in Australia is our prize-money and level of competition, particularly in Sydney. So if either our Karaka colt can compete on our turf over the next 6 weeks, then we can be confident he will hold his own in Auckland in 10 weeks time, plus our prize-money levels ensure he will get a start in the field given the order of entry is based on race earnings.

Our 2023 KM Team:
Below we profile our Karaka Million colt for you and we have shares still available in him at a very palatable price, so please do get in touch if he interests you.

TIME TEST X JOY ANNA (by Iffraaj) Colt
$100,000 Karaka Premier
Bred and raised at Wentwood Grange
Shares Available: Yes
Colours Available: Yes

Key Points:

  • This colt is by a young sire who is going places around the globe. A top class racehorse by Champion sire Dubawi, TIME TEST has left four stakes winners in his first crop of 3YOs in the Northern Hemisphere and he is receiving glowing reports.
  • This colt looks like Dubawi through and through with his awesome deep girth and big action. He was a top 10 physical for Chris Rutten at Karaka also.
  • He is the first foal of four time winner Joy Anna who won at New Zealand's Premier track Ellerslie on two occasions.
  • KARAKA MILLION specific - Time Test sired the 4th place-getter Time Flies in this year's Karaka Million from his first crop. He is also represented by 2YO stakes winner Leedox and 2YO stakes placed Time Less from his first NZ crop. Our colt's mother won twice at Ellerslie where the Karaka Million is contested.
  • Latest Training Update: Commenced fast work this week after a strong foundation of pre-training and 3/4 pace work. Set to jump-out next week.
