Social Element announced himself as a steeplechaser of the highest level at Pakenham on Sunday, when the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained gelding claimed the $100,000 Ecycle Solutions Mosstrooper Steeplechase (3500m).

In doing so the lightly raced seven-year-old defeated the Henry Dwyer duo The Dominator and Riding High who fought out the minor spots, with Ablaze finishing in fourth.

A winner of four of his five jumping starts and all three since returning from close to two years on the sidelines, Social Element and Tom Ryan extended their winning streak and did so comfortably with a 9-length winning margin.

“He got the weight relief but he’s improved with every run,” a delighted Ryan said post-race.

“His first chase he was very novicey whereas you see today he was the true professional, even though he got in tight the last two he was too quick away from the back of it. The way he’s won now he’s obviously a big player (in the Crisp Steeplechase) and onwards towards the National. The further he goes the better he is, I’m looking forward to it.”

The stable confirmed that Social Element will now head to the $125,000 Crisp Steeplechase (4200m) at Sandown on August 1.

Despite being a rising eight-year-old, Social Element has had just 27-starts with prizemoney now close to $340,000. Connections paid $200,000 for the son of Savabeel at the Karaka Ready to Run sales in 2015, with one lucky owner picking up a five-percent share twelve-months ago via Inglis Digital for just $600.

The Mosstrooper Steeplechase was introduced by the Bendigo Jockey Club in 2011 and pays tribute to the champion jumper who claimed the Grand National Hurdle-Steeplechase double a few months before Phar Lap won his Melbourne Cup in 1930.

The Mosstrooper Steeplechase and Brendan Drechsler Hurdle have been conducted at Pakenham since 2019 after Bendigo was deemed unsafe for jumps racing.
