Flight Stakes Highlights Disparity and an Opportunity

The top class performances of NEVER BEEN KISSED & SWIFT WITNESS in Gai and Adrian's Flight Stakes victory (10th win for Gai, and 2nd for Adrian in partnership) have clearly highlighted the huge advantage, by way of opportunity, that three-year-old fillies who can run out a strong mile or further have over their sprinting specialist counterparts.

This has been highlighted for us again this week, as coming out of Saturday both of our Flight Stakes fillies have an embarrassment of serious prize-money options for the remainder of the Spring and beyond.

Whilst our 3YO sprinting fillies have a number of stakes race options against their own age and sex, when you look at Group 1 races and any races worth over $400,000 there is only one race to target - the $500,000 Group 2 Surround Stakes run over 1400m in February 2022. Outside of that they have to take on the best of the boys for their share of the $5.9m on offer in the feature races for 3YO sprinters:

In comparison, the fillies that can run a strong mile and beyond have seven races to target against their own sex and age group worth a staggering $5,250,000. Essentially middle distance fillies have 10X the feature race opportunity in their 3YO seasons when compared to the sprinters. If you take in the options against the males also, like NEVER BEEN KISSED who tackles the $1,000,000 Spring Champion (2000m) this weekend, then we are talking about 20 feature race opportunities worth a combined total of $18,354,500:

This is a significant disparity, and when you add in the observation that most of Australia's breeding industry is geared towards breeding the best sprinters in the world, then you may even generalise that when it comes to 3YO racing the smallest percentage of the thoroughbred population is running for the largest share of the feature race prize-money and trophies.

To this end Gai, Adrian and our team made a concerted effort in 2021 to buy yearlings with the scope and pedigrees to tackle this opportunity in their Classic season.

One such filly is the Pierro x Guangdong filly that we purchased at Magic Millions this year. Stole even! Bred by Gerry Harvey she was always going to be sold at Magic Millions but the sale focussed on 2YO speed probably saw her as a bit of a duck out of water and we were able to land her for just $210,000.

This filly is from a family that knows all about feature race competition:

- Her sire Pierro is a Champion Sire in waiting and already the sire of our VRC Oaks hero, PINOT
- Her broodmare sire is Champion, Fastnet Rock
- Her mother is a half sister to the dam of Australian Guineas winner, ALLIGATOR BLOOD

- Her grand-dam KYLIKWONG, by top stallion Red Ransom, as a 3YO placed in the VRC Oaks, the Australasian Oaks and was fourth in the 1000 Guineas
- Her great grand-dam is Champion 4x Group 1 winner TRACY'S ELEMENT, the dam of Australian Horse Of The Year and 6x Group 1 winner, TYPHOON TRACY

Our Pierro filly ex Guangdong is currently in full-training and she's building her foundation for future success.

Gai, Adrian, Claudia and Bruce profiled her further this week on our Online 2YO Parade:

Finally, beyond the prize-money, trophies, fun and prestige, we should end on the residual value of fillies with less pedigree than ours who have ascended the Guineas & Oaks mountain tops. Earlier this year breeding investors gave a million or more at public auction for the following fillies/mares who performed in these 3YO middle distance events:

$2.7m FUNSTAR - Katsumi Yoshida
$2m QAFILA - Dean Hawthorne
$1.5m GREYSFUL GLAMOUR - Yulong
$1.5m RIMRAAM - Longwood/Sheamus Mills/Peter Morgan
$1.35m EL DORADO DREAMING - Coolmore
