Vancouver Makes His Mark

It’s was a top-class day of racing at Randwick on Saturday and the excitement and anticipation surrounding both the Gimcrack Stakes and Breeders’ Plate was particularly high. These are the opening 2 year old races of the season and the first glimpse of possible future champions.

Our very own champion and stable star Vancouver won the Breeders’ Plate in 2014 before going onto Golden Slipper glory the following Autumn. On Saturday we saw his first crop of 2 year olds hitting the track and he was represented in both the Gimcrack Stakes with Ticket To Ride and the Breeders’ Plate with Postcode.

Ticket To Ride (ex Abbey Road) had no luck in the early stages jumping from a wide barrier and being forced to settle at the rear of the field with cover. She settled at the rear and upon straightening she found clear running out wide and showed a lovely turn of foot to make up very good ground over the final furlong, finishing third by just one and a half lengths from the winner.

Our very own Postcode (ex Never Forget) ran a brilliant race in the Breeder’s Plate to finish second by a length from the winner.  From the inside barrier, he began well but as expected there was a lot of early speed in the race. He settled nicely behind the leaders on the rail but was denied clear running in the straight until the final furlong where he cruised up on the inside and found the line strongly. The colt was a total professional, he has pulled up very well from the run and he will now be targeted at the $1 million 2 Year Old Golden Gift Stakes over 1100m at Rosehill on the 9th of November.

Vancouver was a superstar for us and there is no doubt that he has passed on his talent to his progeny. We are certainly seeing his traits and characteristics shining through in the offspring we train. They are sensible, straightforward and, like their father, very relaxed as they take everything in their stride.

Adrian and I have two outstanding Vancouvers in full training here at Tulloch Lodge. One being a colt out of the Group 1 Coolmore Classic winner, Headway, and the other is a filly out of the Listed & Group placed mare, Angel Bee.

Vancouver x Headway was bred by Tony Santic of Makybe Racing & Breeding and home of three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva. This colt certainly looks the part and he possess a real will to win, just like his father. He is a truly gorgeous individual and we have been particularly impressed with the way he has developed over the last few months. He is taking shape and is consistently receiving glowing reports at trackwork.

Vancouver x Headway Colt

Vancouver x Angel Bee is the most elegant individual and she carries herself beautifully. She oozes class and poise and she is certainly a favourite amongst the stable staff and riders. She possess Stakes like ability, she is a complete natural & we could not be happier with her this campaign. She has her mind on the job and she's a woman on a mission.

Vancouver x Angel Bee

Adrian and I purchased eight Vancouvers at public auction this year & if we could, we would have bought double that amount. This young sire is destined to be the next best thing and we can tell you one thing, you won't be able to buy them cheaply next year. Vancouver x Headway and Vancouver x Angel Bee represent terrific value and you won't have to wait long for the fun to start. They are both on their way to trial this preparation.
