It’s been close to a month since I arrived in Sydney to begin work, but you wouldn’t even know it. Time has flown by quickly and since I only have five months left, I know just how important it is to absorb every bit on information I learn. I easily get swept away in my work, but every now and then I remind myself where I am and how amazing of an opportunity this truly is. Something that has really stuck out to me since the day I arrived is how training horses here focuses a lot more on getting inside the horse’s mind then just judging horses by the times they clock in the mornings. I have experienced this in other training programs in the past, but I really admire how Gai can single out a horse in the dark during a busy work morning, see that something isn’t right, and change the activity for this horse to improve it’s attitude. There are many ways this is done which include trotting in figure eights,, trotting a turn around the track, jumping over small fences, going for a pick of grass, going for a long relaxing walk over the hill, etc. There are many horses with the athletic ability to be decent racehorses, but I have always believed that it’s what goes on in their heads that plays a huge role in how well they are willing to perform. For example, I was riding a nervous filly the other day who was not having a good day mentally. I took her over to the jumps and within minutes her attitude completely changed. Just that one change to her routine and something fun for her to do, she was able to relax and put her mind at ease by doing a fun activity. I very much enjoy getting to know each horse I work with. They are like people and each one has a different personality. I look forward to getting to know many different horses during my time here.

Kind Regards,

Mary
